Kabu

Born in 1987, Kabu spent many years working in the logging industry. During that time, she was struck by a log while working in the forest, dislocating her front left ankle. The injury was never properly treated, leaving her with a severe and permanent deformity. Over time, she relied heavily on her right leg to support her weight, which also became deformed.

Despite her injuries, Kabu was forced to continue hauling logs and later endured a cruel breeding pro-gram. She gave birth to two calves, but sadly, both were taken from her. One, a male, tragically died shortly after his spirit was broken during the brutal phajaan ritual. The other, a female, was sold into tourism.

Kabu was rescued in September 2015 by Save Elephant Foundation. When she arrived, she struggled to bond with other elephants after a lifetime of pain and heartbreak. That changed in January 2019, when Chana, a young elephant who also suffered a serious leg injury, was rescued.
Since then, Kabu and Chana have been inseparable. They’re often seen wallowing in Kabu’s beloved mud pit or enjoying hydrotherapy sessions in the pool that thelp their leg injuries. Today, Kabu’s fami-ly has grown to include Sai Thong (Chana’s half-sister) and two playful young elephants, Chom Pu and Muay Lek, whom she lovingly nurtures as her own.

It is heartwarming to see Kabu living peacefully, surrounded by a caring herd, finally free to experience the love, respect, and dignity she has always deserved. Despite her disability, Kabu remains remarka-bly mobile and embodies a strong will, quiet grace, and the spirit of a true survivor.
