Seven remarkable years have passed since a gentle, broken-spirited young elephant stepped out of the shadows of exploitation and into the welcoming embrace of his new safe and loving home. Gluay Hom’s story first captured global attention when a poignant article by Natasha Daly for National Geographic exposed the distressing reality of wildlife tourism, revealing an image of Gluay Hom standing in agonizing isolation on a concrete floor.
When Save Elephant Foundation rushed to investigate, they found a reality even more heartbreaking than the photographs suggested. Torn from his mother as a baby for circus training, Gluay Hom had spent his early life, on a short chain at the Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm. He suffered from severe malnutrition, muscle atrophy in his hind legs, a painful and inflamed leg wound, and a parasitic condition. On arrival at the sanctuary in August 2019, Gluay Hom tested asymptomatic positive for EEHV, requiring an extended period of quarantine and medical treatment.
Despite these overwhelming hardships, Gluay Hom’s resilient spirit quietly waited to emerge. In quarantine, he discovered the comfort of nutritious food, gaining much-needed weight and strength. He also responded well to medication, and his leg continued to improve. Moments of pure magic unfolded when he experienced deep water for the first time, splashing about in his pool with carefree abandon.
Over the past seven years, his transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. Under the loving care of Lek Chailert and the dedicated SEF team, Gluay Hom has grown into a magnificent, handsome tusker full of presence and charm. He has turned the deposited earth mounds into his own private playgrounds, discovering fresh grasses that diversify his diet and keeping his days active and engaging.
Today, Gluay Hom spends his time rediscovering the joy of simply being an elephant. Whether he is greeting visitors with his sweet smile, relaxing under the afternoon sun, or wandering freely without chains, bullhooks, or human demands, he embodies a life of enduring dignity. He seems to hold no bitterness toward his past, choosing instead to embrace every waking moment with a cheerful, gentle nature.
As we celebrate seven years of freedom, Gluay Hom’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the healing power of sanctuary life. His evolution from a terrified, captive adolescent into a confident, majestic young bull is a tribute to compassion in action. We are deeply grateful to The Greater Good for providing the funds for the rescue of Gluay Hom and to everyone who helped write this beautiful new chapter in the life of Gluay Hom—a gentle spirited elephant living life happily, free from harm.
