Born in 2005, Bunma was rescued on 11 August 2021, from an elephant show and riding camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand, along with her 4-month-old baby, Chaba. At the camp, Bunma was forced to perform circus tricks, ride a bicycle, and paint pictures for tourists. She was also subjected to a forced breeding program that resulted in Chaba’s birth on 17 May 2021.
When Save Elephant Foundation learned of their dire situation, confined to a barren concrete pen with Bunma on a short chain, the team acted quickly to negotiate their rescue. On the day of their rescue, Bunma’s fear of being separated from Chaba made transporting them by truck too distressing, so the pair walked two hours to the park, where they were greeted with a special welcome home elephant fruit cake.
Now free from exploitation, Bunma’s playful spirit has emerged, and she often joins in the fun with the same enthusiasm as her daughter. Despite her youthful energy, she remains a devoted and protective mother to Chaba, who is growing into a sweet young elephant.
Through Chaba’s friendship with Pyi Mai, Bunma has formed a close bond with Pyi Mai’s mother, Kham Moon, and nanny, Dmax. Bunma is now part of a tight-knit, loving family that shares the responsibility of caring for the young ones. This support gives her the freedom to play, swim, take mud baths, and enjoy a relaxed, peaceful life in her sanctuary home.
