Born in 1992, Kham Moon was rescued on 21 January 2021, from an elephant trekking camp in Chiang Mai, along with her baby, Pyi Mai. At the camp, Kham Moon was forced to carry tourists on her back day after day and was part of a forced breeding program.
Before their rescue, they lived in heartbreakingly bleak conditions. Kham Moon was kept on a short chain in a tiny concrete enclosure, without enough space to care for her baby or adequate access to food and water. After learning of their plight, Save Elephant Foundation was able to arrange their rescue, offering Kham Moon and her baby a better, more natural life in a safe and nurturing home.
Upon arriving at the park, they were warmly welcomed by the resident elephants, many of whom were eager to become Pyi Mai’s nanny. Among them was Dmax, a kind and patient elephant who frequently visited and shared meals with the new arrivals. Over time, she won Kham Moon’s trust and became Pyi Mai’s devoted nanny.
Pyi Mai soon formed an inseparable bond with Chaba, prompting Kham Moon to welcome Chaba’s mother, Bunma, into their closely bonded family. Now, Kham Moon is affectionately known as a ‘Super Mum’, caring tenderly for both calves and even sharing her milk with Chaba, while Dmax keeps a protective eye on the dynamic duo. Today, Kham Moon’s beautiful herd thrives at the park, embracing a life of unconditional love and care.
