Moh Loh is a female elephant born on 14 February 2000 in the Om Koi district of Northern Thailand. Like many captive elephants, she spent her life working in logging and later in the trekking industry, carrying tourists on her back. Her baby, Lek Lek, was born into the same cycle of hardship, destined for a life of labour and exploitation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when tourism shut down, the owner brought Moh Loh back to their home village. Save Elephant Foundation provided support to many elephants in Om Koi, including Moh Loh and her calf. However, as lockdowns lifted and tourism returned, these elephants were at risk of being sold back into the entertainment industry, so arrangements were swiftly made for their rescue.
On 12 March 2023, Moh Loh and Lek Lek began their long journey from Om Koi to the park, arriving safely to start a new chapter in a caring home. Since then, they have embraced sanctuary life — wandering freely, playing in the river, and rolling in the mud, enjoying the simple pleasures of just being elephants. Their bond, once under threat, now grows stronger each day.
More recently, Moh Loh has formed a close friendship with Grandma Jokia, a blind elephant who lovingly cares for little Lek Lek as her nanny. Their small herd has grown to include Sai Fon, Apple, and Sri Sook, who all help nurture the young calf. Moh Loh and Lek Lek will never be separated again and are now fortunate to live a life of freedom in a loving herd.
