NamThip

NamThip’s life began with heartbreak. Born in Surin, she was taken from her mother at just eight months old, before she was weaned, and never knew the love of an elephant family. From a young age NamThip was trained for various events and was forced to work entertaining people — begging on the streets and performing demeaning tricks, including being made to stand on two legs. Her once-perfect tail was injured when she was just two, and left untreated until it rotted and fell off, leaving a stump.
By 13 years old, NamThip’s young body already bore the marks of years of neglect and exploitation. Severely underweight, with a trembling trunk and sunken eyes, her plight gained public attention through a video that reached Saengduean “Lek” Chailert, the founder of Save Elephant Foundation. NamThip was rescued in February 2024 and brought to the park to start a new life in a caring, loving home.
Upon arrival, NamThip faced serious health challenges, from malnutrition to urinary issues and chronic eye inflammation. But with veterinary care, gentle mahouts, and patient guidance from her adoptive mother, Malai Thong, and nannies, Mintra, Pond Sawan, and Kratae, she began to heal, both physically and emotionally.
Today, NamThip is a playful and curious young elephant who is learning the ways of life in a herd. Once withdrawn and wary, she is now growing in confidence and trust, thanks to the love and support of her new family. She enjoys relaxing in the water, taking mud baths, and exploring alongside her devoted herd. Her transformation is a testament to the healing power of love, security, compassion, and second chances.
