Elephant

Raya

Beautiful RaYa endured decades of hardship in the logging and elephant riding industries, even after suffering a broken right hind leg. Despite her injury, her former owner continued to use her for forced labour, leading to years of intense suffering, chronic pain, and emotional trauma.

After learning of RaYa’s plight, Save Elephant Foundation organized an urgent rescue mission, made possible by generous donations raised in honor of Lek’s 60th birthday. On 23 December 2021, RaYa was rescued from an elephant camp in Southern Thailand and brought to the sanctuary to begin her healing journey.

Since her arrival, RaYa has adjusted well to her new life, enjoying an abundance of food and the freedom to swim in the river, take mud baths, and simply enjoy being an elephant. She has blossomed in her new home, where she feels safe and well cared for. Although she still enjoys her solitude, RaYa has discovered a deep sense of peace and security that allows her happiness to shine.

Rescued in honor of Lek’s milestone birthday, RaYa’s story is a compelling reminder of the power of compassion. It is hoped that, in time, she will form bonds with other elephants who can support her continued recovery. RaYa’s transformation reflects the healing power of sanctuary life, where she now lives with peace and dignity.
